Inside Manhattan House, one of New York’s most significant landmarks of postwar modernism, Harry built exactly that – a private world made equally for entertaining and for disappearing. Framed doors in the Entry Hall gave way to jib doors, including the one to the Bedroom, letting a custom mural of a whimsical tropical garden wrap the space without interruption. In the Living Room, lapis-lazuli walls and moldings set off the client’s art, a 1970s gunmetal-and-brass mantel, and two cactus poufs nodding to the client’s native New Mexico. It’s what they asked for – with a little extra and a smile.
